This is one of a number of vestas / match safes that we are currently listing. This is an original World War Two period tin plate & celluloid match box cover or grip, of British manufacture, and dating to around 1940 - 43. The front of the case is entitled 'In the Allies Grip', & shows a caricature portrait of Adolf Hitler with a hand around his neck, the fingers on the hand bearing the Allies names of 'CHINA, BRITAIN, AMERICA, RUSSIA, & the FREE FRENCH'. The spine of the case reads 'THE GREATEST ENEMY IN HISTORY AGAINST HUMANITY IS AT LAST IN THE ALLIES GRIP', with 'Copyright' & 'British Made' at either end. The rear of the case is entitled 'MUSSOLINI'S NOTE TO ADOLF', & reads 'Why oh! why, Must I die, All through you. Oh! the pity of it all. Oh! the pity of it all. - With one twist, Of that wrist, We'll be through - Oh! the pity of it all. Oh! the pity of it all. Yours broken-heartedly, Mussolini'. Condition is good, with no splits, or damage to the celluloid. There is the expected foxing to the edges (which is under the celluloid). Dimensions are approx 2 1/4" x 1 5/8" (approx 5.8cm x 4.1cm). Overall, an extremely scarce WW2 period cover, |
