This is a Victorian era hinged trinket ? box made from a coconut shell, fitted with silver metal mounts & a silver plate foot, & dating to around the mid to late 19th Century. The box is made from the two halves of a polished coconut shell, each edge mounted with a silver metal rim, hinged at the back & with a clasp fastening to the front. The box sits on a silver plated, stepped pedestal foot. The box hinges open to reveal the finished, but unpolished, interior. Due to the natural shape of the coconut, the box will not stand up when fully open, unless there is some weight (contents) in the base - this is not a fault, it is the way the box has been designed. Condition is Fine, with no damage or restoration. The box stands approx 5" (approx 12.7cm) high, with a circumference of around 11" at the centre (around 28cm). Due to the materials used, the box is quite light in weight. Overall, an unusual Victorian era box, useful for trinkets, jewellery, or simply for display, & in Fine condition.
