This is a Victorian figural plated cast iron matchsafe or vesta, most probably made in Europe & modelled in the form of an 18th / 19th C. gentleman , & dating to around 1890. The vesta has been cast in iron (or similar ferrous metal) & then finished in a brass / gilt colour. The vesta is in the form of a rotund gentleman with a Tricorne hat, his hair tied at the back with a bow, & wearing a waistcoat & jacket & carrying a stick or sword in his right hand, & with some form of container in his rear pocket. (I thought perhaps a naval figure ?) The tricorne hat is hinged at the neck, and opens to reveal a compartment for storing the vestas or matches, whilst the top of the hat has a concentric ring pattern, for use as a striking surface. Similar holders are shown and described in the Alsford / Schiffer book 'Match Holders'. The holder measures a maximum of approx 2 7/8" tall (approx 7.3cm). Condition is Good, with a strong hinge, although there is a little sideways play. The finish is rubbed in places & the surface has the expected, light pitting & very light surface rust. |
