This is a Victorian figural vesta or match safe, made of brass and almost certainly of European origin, & dating to around 1890. The case is in the form of an 'outhouse' or outside WC, and comes with two independent hinged openings, & a ribbed striking surface to the base. The roof of the 'outhouse' hinges backwards to reveal a compartment for storing matches, and the 'door' hinges open to reveal a Victorian gentleman, complete with top hat, sitting down on the toilet. This slightly risqué vesta case can be found on page 67 in the Schiffer / Alsford book 'Match Holders'. Condition is Fine. The case would have originally been plated, but this is rubbed (still visible to the interior), & there are a few tiny marks to the sides (as would be expected for it's 120 years). The hinges / openings are Fine - please see magnified photos. The case measures approx 2" or 5cm high (at the highest point). Overall, a highly detailed, novelty vesta case in lovely condition.
