Relisted due to a non paying bidder. This is a vintage Dunhill Broadboy Mk1 or Half Cap petrol lighter, made of solid silver, & fully hallmarked (in 4 places) for London 1948. The lighter sparks, but I have not tested it with petrol. The lighter is rectangular in form, with an engine turned design to the exterior (inc lid & base), a half cap, & a small thumb wheel. The lighter has a concealed flint chamber, where the top part of the spine slides away to reveal the flint chamber & spring, & another chamber below for storing spare flints. The base of the lighter has a hinged handle petrol filler cap, which unscrews to access the 'wool' filled interior. The end of the cap has an attached spike. The base is marked 'MADE IN ENGLAND' & 'PAT 440072' (a patent design registered by Bach & Cooper), whilst the top edge of the cap is marked 'Dunhill'. The lighter is fully hallmarked to the interior ! with the makers mark 'AD' (Alfred Dunhill), the date letter 'N' (1948 - 49), the lion passant (925 Sterling), & the leopards head (London). Additionally, the interior of the cap carries the lion passant & leopards head, whilst the base & the petrol filler cap both carry the lion passant. Condition is FAIR. The engine turning is worn in places, there are small knocks & bruises, & there is scratching to the flint chamber cover : please see magnified photos. The thumb wheel, although turning & sparking, has some movement, & the cap hinge is fine, but the cap does not 'lock' (if you hold the lighter upside down, the top will open). There is a spring there, but I've not handled another Broadboy, so unsure of the mechanism. The lighter measures approx 6cm x 3.5cm & weighs 62.9 g, 2.22 oz, or 2.02 Troy. Overall, a scarce lighter, particularly in Solid Silver, in need of some TLC.
