Erotic Risque Saucy matchbox cover / holder c. 1920

This is a tin plate and celluloid matchbox holder or grip dating to the 1920's

It is unusual in that it has full colour 'reversible' illustration to one side (the vast majority of 'risque' or 'saucy postcard' type holders do not have a reversible image and usually have a black & white illustration.)

These 'comedy' holders were quite popular in the 1920's/30's, particularly in Australia, where most carry an advertisement for a local business (this particular holder does not), which makes it even more unusual.

One side of the holder has a cartoon of a 'Mexican/Spanish Gentleman with a wooden leg, and a Lady restraining her dog on a leash (presumably to stop it relieving itself on the Gentlemans wooden leg)- The caption is "OH PEE WEE YOU NAUGHTY DOG.

The other side of the holder is entitled "VANITY", and at first glance is entirely innocent, as it shows a 1920's Lady admiring herself in a mirror, but if you reverse the holder and place your thumb over the Lady's head, it will show an image of the Lady 'powdering' her 'nether regions' - Please see all photos.

A similar, but not risque, reversible case is shown on page 101 in the 'Schiffer Book on Match Holders'.

Condition is absolutely superb for age, with no foxing (there are a few tiny scratches underneath the 'vanity' Lady's arm - please see images).

The case measures Height : 6cm x Width : 4cm x Depth 2cm.
