This is a tin plate & celluloid matchbox holder or grip, probably of Australian manufacture, and dating to the 1920's. These holders were used for advertising purposes during the 1920's / 1930's, particularly in Australia. The images & captions are very reminiscent of Donald McGill's 'saucy postcards'. The front of the case shows a new Mother holding a baby & a Midwife : the caption reads 'If my memory does not deceive me, its a Boy!. The reverse of the case shows a Lady sitting on a beach holding a piece of seaweed : the caption reads 'Weather Forecast, I think its going to rain, my sea-wee's quite damp'. The spine of the case reads : with compliments from RM (MAC) TURBET,Robbie Burns Hotel, Wyndham, NSW, Phone 3. Condition is excellent, celluloid & tin plate are in fantastic condition, with only a tiny spot of foxing on one corner, & no rusting, Dimensions are approx 6cm high, 4cm wide, and 2.3cm deep. |
