This is a tin plate & celluloid matchbox holder or grip, probably of Australian manufacture, and dating to the 1920's. These holders were used for advertising purposes during the 1920's / 1930's, particularly in Australia. The images & captions are very reminiscent of Donald McGill's 'saucy postcards'. The front of the case shows a young Lady, diving off a highboard into a swimming pool, with her swimsuit at her knees : the caption reads 'Damn !, there goes my swim suit'. The reverse of the case shows 3 boys sitting in a bathtub, holding Australian & British Union flags : the caption reads ' What we have we hold'. The spine of the case reads : An appreciation from WF Williamson, Bright Spot Cafe, Brunswick Junction, WA, Taxi Service Tel 267. Condition is fantastic for age, there is some very light foxing & there is a small hole in the celluloid to the front of the case (where an errant spark from a match has landed). The tin plate is excellent. Dimensions are approx 6cm high, 4cm wide, and 2cm deep. |
