This is a superb, large & heavy, solid Sterling Silver trophy cup, fully hallmarked for Birmingham 1918. The form of the trophy is very 'Art Deco', with it's classic shape & large angular handles. The rim of the lip and base have gadrooned design. The trophy, although fully hallmarked for 1918, has a much later engraved inscription, which reads ; 'GRIFFIN GOLFING SOCIETY CHALLENGE CUP presented 1960'. This inscription could easily be erased (due to the heavy guage of the Silver), or in-filled. The trophy is UN WEIGHTED & weighs a huge 490 g, 17.25 oz, or 15.73 Troy. The hallmarks are lion passant (925), Anchor (Birmingham), date letter 't' (1918-19), & makers mark (WM Co for Wilmott Manufacturing Co - Birmingham makers during the 1st half of the 20 C.) CONDITION : condition is good, particularly for it's 89 years, There are 3 pinhead dents on the top of the L/H handle, & a slight 1.3cm split on the outward bottom edge of the R/H handle (the handles are of hollow construction & easily rectified). The rear of the cup has 2 or 3 tiny bruises (hard to see due to the heavy guage Silver). The trophy would have been displayed on a wooden base. DIMENSIONS : Height is approx 25.5cm, Width (handle to handle) is approx 21.5cm, Rim is approx 12.3cm diameter, & base is approx 9.3 diameter. All in all, a very heavy (15.73 Troy) 'Art Deco' trophy cup. |
