This is a provincial Scottish Sterling Silver Celtic Point teaspoon, made during the reign of George III by the Dundee silversmith James Douglas, & hallmarked for Dundee circa 1795. The spoon is of the Celtic Point pattern, a variation of the Old English pattern with a pointed terminal. The front of the terminal has the initials 'HW' engraved in script. The spoon is fully hallmarked to the rear of the terminal with the makers marks of James Douglas ('ID' & two Dundee marks). This mark, one of two used by James Douglas, can be found on page 600 of Jackson's, which dates this mark to between 1795 and 1800. The hallmark is very unusual, in that it is one of only four known Dundee Silversmiths marks, which do not contain the arms of Dundee (a pot of lilies). Condition is good for its 213 years, there is a slight crease to one side of the bowl, which could be easily remedied, but this is quite minor & does not detract, given the spoons age. WEIGHT : the spoon weighs approx 11.3 g. DIMENSIONS : Approx length is 13 cm (approx 5 1/8"). Overall, a rare provincial Scottish Silver spoon, with clear hallmarks, & in good condition for its 213 years.
