This is a matching set of 12 Silver tea or coffee spoons in a fitted case, of the Rat-tail pattern & by the silversmiths L.A, & fully hallmarked for Sheffield 1942. Each spoon has a long rat-tail to the reverse of the bowl, a pronounced central ridge to the front of the stem, an upturned terminal and, in keeping with the original early 18th Century examples, bottom struck hallmarks. Each spoon is fully hallmarked to the base of the stem with the makers mark 'L.A' in a shield cartouche, the Crown (Sheffield), the Lion Passant (925 Sterling), & the date letter 'z' (1942 - 43). Each spoon has the surname initials 'McD' engraved to the reverse of the terminal. The case is finished in a black faux leather with Gold tooling, & opens via a push button. The interior lid is lined with cream 'silk' & bears the retailers stamp of 'Jas Ramsey - Dundee', & the fitted base is covered in a grey velvet. Condition of the spoons is excellent, with absolutely no damage or wear. The box is in Fine condition, there is expected light wear to the base, an extremely light surface scratch to the top (has not broken through the covering so will easily polish out), & some fading to the interior lining. Overall, in fantastic condition for their 66 years. Each spoon measures approx 4 1/8" or 10.5 cm in length, & the total weight is 149 g, 5.26 oz, or 4.79 Troy. Overall, a very high quality set, unusual to find a fitted case of a dozen, & in excellent condition. Please note: we also have a matching cased 2 piece Dessert knife & spoon set, in the same pattern / date & with the same monogram, & also retailed by Jas Ramsey of Dundee.
