Smiths Art Deco Desktop Aneroid Barometer c. 1930's

This is an Art Deco period desktop barometer, in a stunning design evocative of the period, & made in England by Smiths around the 1930's.

The barometer stand sits on a cast aluminium foot, which has a chromed & fluted or lobed style Deco design to the front. To the stand is fixed a large and thick circle of clear acrylic or perspex, in the centre of which, sits the actual barometer.

Although the acrylic circle is clear, it seems to take on a pinkish tinge at certain angles.

The rear of the barometer is housed in an aluminium case, which has 3 tiny screws (to remove the casing ?), & a small hole that gives access to a larger screw which, I think, is used to adjust the barometer.

The face of the barometer, which is glazed with a chromed rim, has a satin silver colour with satin gold text. The face is marked with a dial to the outside numbered 28 to 31, with indications of expected weather conditions to the inside (stormy, rain, change, fair, very dry). The dial is also marked 'SMITHS', 'MADE IN ENGLAND', & 'BRITISH PATS APPLIED FOR'.

The barometer needle has a blued finish, and there is also an 'indicator' needle, sitting directly above the barometer needle, which is adjusted manually via a chromed thumbscrew in the centre of the face.

There is a small embossed design to the top of the acrylic circle, showing two hands shaking between the letters 'I' & 'U'. This makes me think that the barometer was commissioned by an insurance Co or mutual society ? as a gift for their better customers etc (this is purely a guess)

Condition is fine, the barometer works (although I can't guarantee the accuracy), the chromed rim has a little minor bubbling to the very top edge, & the rear of the foot has some very minor tarnishing (this isn't seen when displayed, & could be cleaned). There is some light scratching around the screws on the rear of the case, & there are traces of adhesive to the base of the foot - please see photos.

The barometer is approx 4 3/4" in diameter (slightly higher in height), & approx 1 1/2" deep (exc. the 'indicator screw). The actual face is approx 3" in diameter (inc rim). (12 cm, 3.8 cm, & 7.8 cm).

Overall, a stunning & original Deco barometer, in fine condition for it's near 80 years.
