This is a George V solid Silver vesta case or matchsafe, by the silversmiths J Gloster, & fully hallmarked for Birmingham 1916. The case is rectangular in form, with an inset, concave striker, & a fixed suspension ring on the top of the lid to enable attachment to an Albert or watch chain, etc. The front of the case has been engraved in period script with the initials 'GHG'. The case is fully hallmarked to the interior lip with the makers mark 'J.G Ltd' (for J Gloster Ltd), the Anchor (Birmingham), the Lion Passant (925 Sterling), & the date letter 'r' (1916 - 17). The lion Passant & the date letter are repeated on the front of the lid. Condition is Fine, there are no dings or dents, & the spring, hinge, & closure are extremely strong: fantastic for it's 92 years. The vesta measures approx 1 7/8" long (excluding the suspension ring), & 1 3/8" wide (approx 4.9 cm x 3.6 cm). The weight is 24.4 g, or 0.86 oz. Overall, a fine vesta from the middle of the World War 1 period.
