Art Deco Silver & Gold Match Case: Mappin & Webb 1939

This is a stunning Art Deco sterling Silver & Gold match book holder or vesta, by the illustrious firm of Mappin & Webb, and fully hallmarked for London 1939.

Each side of the case has four bevelled edges, & features an engine turned design, with the front of the case having two Gold edges with a vertical lined design, meeting in a Gold, triple stepped, rectangular cartouche - typical of the Art Deco period.

The cartouche is engraved with the small initials 'RMC'

The case is opened via a push button to the front, to reveal a gilded interior which has two raised corners, designed to hold a match book in place.

The case is fully hallmarked to one side of the interior with the makers mark 'MN & WB' (for Mappin & Webb), the leopards head (London), the lion passant (925 sterling), & the date letter 'D' (for 1939 - 40). The makers mark, lion passant & the leopards head are repeated on the opposite side, with the opening button carrying the lion passant.

The case is also engraved to the inner lip with 'PAGE, KEEN, & PAGE - PLYMOUTH' which is (presumably) the retailer.

Condition is fantastic, there are absolutely no dents or repairs and the opening & hinge are perfect. The interior gilding is fair, there is some tarnishing & two small marks at the bottom of the interior where the 'match holder' is - please see photo.

The case measures approx 2 1/2" long, 1 3/4" wide, & 3/8" deep (approx 6.2cm x 4.5cm x 1cm).

The case weighs 55.4 g, 1.95 oz, or 1.78 Troy.

All in all, an extremely stylish & high quality case, in superb condition for it's 69 years.
