This is a stunning little Arts & Crafts Pewter bowl with Ruskin inserts, made by William Hutton & almost certainly retailed by Liberty & Co or Connell of Cheapside, and dating to around 1910. The bowl, which sits on a circular pedestal foot, has a flared bottom & middle which tapers upwards to the flared lip. The bowl has two stylised, symmetrical handles, & has two Ruskin ceramic cabochons mounted on either side. The Ruskin inserts are in a stunning blue & green ceramic glaze (Ruskin pottery was founded in 1898, & ceased trading in 1933). The base of the bowl is fully marked with the 8 crossed arrows (registered to Creswick, which was acquired by William Hutton in 1900), HUTTON SHEFFIELD, PEWTER (each letter in a square cartouch), & the pattern No. '04008' over '3'. Condition is Fine. The only thing to note is a very small knock to the edge of the lip (easily rectified). The bowl is approx 2 7/8" high, with an approximate width (inc. handles) of 5 1/4" (approx 7.3cm & 13.3cm). Although the bowl has a lovely 100 year old patina, it would look stunning if polished back to it's original bright finish. Overall, a classic piece of Arts & Crafts pewter from an illustrious maker. |
