This is an Edwardian Silver & Turquoise sliding pencil holder, by the silversmith William Hornby, & fully hallmarked for London 1903. The holder is rectangular in form, with a rolled lip at one end & an attached suspension ring at the other end to enable hanging from a chatelaine or Albert chain etc. The sliding mechanism is operated via a Silver mounted, cabochon cut Turquoise button, which allows the pencil to be propelled forward. The rear of the holder bears the engraved initials 'D.Mc.F.', & is fully hallmarked with the makers mark 'WH' (William Hornby), the lion passant (925 Sterling), the leopards head (London), & the date letter 'h' (1903 - 04). The holder measures approx 3 1/2" (approx 8.8cm) in length, excluding the suspension ring, & was designed to hold the flat, rectangular pencils which were popular in the late 19th / early 20th C. Condition is Fine, with no damage. |
