This is a vintage English 'detectives' truncheon, made of turned Lignum vitae, & dating to around the 1930's / 40's. Detectives truncheons were so called, as due to their shorter length (around 12" as opposed to the standard issue 15" - 17"), they were usually carried by detective officers, as they were less conspicuous. The truncheon, turned from a single piece of nicely figured Lignum vitae, features a rounded end which tapers down to a turned, four finger grip, with an extra turning to attach the leather strap (present), & a turned end. The truncheon measures approx 12" or 30.3cm in length (excluding the strap), & weighs approx 8 oz. As with many 20th C. truncheons, there are no identifying marks. Condition is fine, with only light signs of use with light marks / very light knocks. The leather strap is almost certainly a later replacement. |
