This is an Islamic silver metal matchbox holder or cover with niello decoration to both sides, probably of Iraqi or Iranian origin, & dating to around the 1930's / 40's. The holder is rectangular in form, open at the top, & with both edges having a shaped oblong opening (to access the striker), & the bottom having an oval 'finger hole' (to push out the matchbox tray). Both sides of the holder have niello decoration; one side depicting a river scene, with a Dhow (or similar sailing boat) & a large flower head / foliate decoration, whilst the other side depicts a Mosque & other buildings. There are no hallmarks on the holder (as tends to be the norm on Middle Eastern Silver of this period), so the case is being offered as solid white metal. Condition is good, with no dents, splits, or repairs. The only points to note are there are the expected, age related surface marks & small spots of surface pitting to the niello work, & there are some small losses to the niello borders around the decorations. The holder measures approx 2 1/4" long, 1 5/8" wide, & 3/4" deep (approx 5.7cm, 4.1cm, & 1.9cm), & weighs 31g, 1.09oz, or 1 Troy.
