This is one of a number of vestas / match safes that we are currently listing. This is a World War One tin plate & celluloid match box cover or grip, of British manufacture, and dating to around 1914 - 16 (pre Russian Revolution of 1917). The front of the case shows the Allies flags (from L to R) : The RUSSIAN EMPIRE, BRITAIN, FRANCE, & BELGIUM. The spine of the case has 'Matches', written in script, & 'BRITISH MADE'. The rear of the case is entitled 'LIBERTY OR DEATH', & depicts a coastal scene of a Lady cradling a baby, with the Allied flags of the RUSSIAN EMPIRE, FRANCE, JAPAN, GREAT BRITAIN, & BELGIUM, flying behind her. Circling the Lady, are the respective Allied soldiers, with rifles / bayonets at the ready. Similar holders can be found on page 100 in the Alsford/Schiffer book 'Match Holders'. Condition is Fair for age. The holder is structurally sound, with only 2 tiny splits to the spine corners. There is the expected foxing to the edges, heavier foxing to the top of the spine, & two burn marks to the celluloid (front & rear) - please see magnified photos. Dimensions are approx 2 1/2" x 1 5/8" (approx 6.3cm x 4.1cm). Overall, an extremely scarce, early WW1 period titled pictorial cover. |
