This is a World War Two period, British made celluloid & tin plate matchbox cover or grip, dating to 1940. The front of the cover has 'R.A.F' below the winged insignia. The spine of the cover has 'ROYAL AIR FORCE', & 'BRITISH MADE' at either end. The rear of the holder features one of Winston Churchill's famous speeches, with 'NEVER IN THE FIELD OF HUMAN CONFLICT WAS SO MUCH OWED BY SO MANY TO SO FEW' highlighted in Capitals. The speech is 'signed' '- THE PRIME MINISTER, 1940' Condition of the holder is Fair. The front panel has yellowed, & there are a few hairlines & a split to one corner of the celluloid. The holder has remarkably little foxing, with only a few light spots to the spine. The holder measures approx 2 1/4" x 1 5/8" (approx 5.7cm x 4.1cm). |
