Antique Mexican Gold Filigree and Pearl Necklace/Earrs.
Extraordinary necklace and earrings et from Tehuantepec Mexico in the State of Oaxaca. Women from the Isthmus of Tehuantepec have traditionally wore large gold jewelry to decorate their extraordinary embroidered dresses. These women have inspired many artist, writers and photographers for their strong character and their love for life, dance and GOLD. The towns of Tehuantepec and Juchitan are considered to be on a matriarchal social structure. Women here work hard and do all the commercial transactions. The men fish or work the fields but the money and power lies within the women of the town. Frida Kahlo wore Tehuana costumes. This set is a very old and rare find. Most of these older pieces are impossible to find. The name of the design is moņos or muņecas (bows or dolls). The design is clearly Victorian and these wealthy regions have always kept in touch with the fashion of the outside world. The quality and density of filigree is an important indicator of the age of these pieces. In the 20th C filigree became less and less dense and intricate. This set is a jewelry treasure. From a private collection of fine Mexican gold jewelry. Earrings are wire for pierced ears. Necklace is 16" long with he pendant adding another 3" drop. The earrings are a full 3" long! Pearls are natural and gorgeous. COLLECTOR QUALITY
