Fine Dainichi Nyorai Buddha(Great Cosmic Buddha) sculpture. Dainichi Nyorai is seated on a decorated dais made in the shape of a great lotus flower. His hands form the characteristic “Vajra-mudra” (Mudra of Supreme Wisdom). This unique sculpture is made of wood by “Yozeki Zukuri”(Joined-block Technique), is lacquered and gilded, and has beautiful crystal(glass) eye-inserts. Very fine Jizo Bodhisattva sculpture. Jizo(“Savior of Souls Suffering in Hell”; “Patron of Pilgrims”; “Protector of Travelers and Children”), is one of the most popular Buddhist deities in Japan. He is depicted holding a “wish full-filling” gem in one hand, and a Shokujo(six-ring staff) in the other. Rare "Emma"(Yama, Lord Of Death) statue. This? statue is made from wood using "Yoseki Zukuri"(Joined-block Technique), and has an elaborate polychrome-painted design(paint-traces are still visible). It appears that it might have originally had crystal eye-inserts. Considering its age, this sculpture is in very good condition. There are minor abrasions and losses(one hand is missing). Very fine early Edo-period statue of Amida Nyorai Buddha(Buddha of Infinite Life/Light). This wooden statue was made by "Joined-block Technique"(Yozeki Zukuri), and is lacquered and gilded. It has beautiful crystal(glass) eye-inserts, and(considering its age) is in very good condition(only minor abrasions). Dimensions: H.33cm, W.25cm

Very large (mythologically important) early-Japanese temple architectural element(Kibana). This elephant-like creature represents the mythological "Baku"(Eater of Nightmares). It was originally mounted as an ornament under the corner roof eaves of a Japanese temple or shrine. From the Kamakura period(12th-14th c.), this fiercely expressive statue was carved in great detail from a thick and richly grained single block of dense wood(possibly Keyaki wood).
