| Rare and fairly large ema painting . Wood with polychrome paint and calligraphy ink In Japan ema ( votive pictures) can be found hung in Shinto Shrines and Buddhist Temples . Usually in form of framed tablets with chevron-shaped tops this paintings hung in hall of worship or in a gallery of the temple. In some cases when shrine or temple are in possession of many such paintings a special place called Emado is build to contain them and in many cases this place also serves as a resting place for a visitors . Generally this paintings are presented by a person who is going to pray to the Buddha or those whose prayer have been answered . This particular ema has inscription with accurate dating (anei 5th or 1776) and name of the person who painted it ..as well as prayer of good wishes . Painting is in excellent condition considering that i have been exposed to open air for centuries with beautiful brown patina accumulated on wood surface during this years.
