With scholarly tastes running against the bright colors and decor of cloisonne, most pieces of this period were made feminine tastes in mind, or for imperial or temple decor. this piece, with its archaistic design motif and use of color, belongs most likely to one of the latter two categories, and with the particular use of yellow and absent any major Buddhist or Taoist motifs, probably for someone associated to some degree with the court. Depicting a line of 7th level mandarins and their wives, this large, highly detailed ancestor portrait dates to the end of the Qing dynasty, probably between the 1890s and 1911. Some losses, aging normal for something of this period. One noted repair, to the top right corner. Measurements, framed are: 68.5x39.75 inches. When looking at the detail pictures, note the attention paid to the landscape painting depicted behind the lower right trio.

Of a different design, but similar purpose to our other Ge, this blade is in wonderful condition, with the unmineralized metal showing through most of the blade, and a malachite and cuprite patina with mineralized organic matter on parts. Dating to probably the Western Zhou. See enlargements for microphotos of mineralized areas for evidence of authenticity. Approximately 8.25 inches, 21 cm. in length

This horse armor, bronze frontlets intended to protect the 'face',were originally purchased in the 1970s and described as being for a pair of chariot horses. They are rarely seen individually let alone in pairs. Each has a cast ideogram to the inside, the larger of the two having been translated as meaning "Wan", or 10,000.
