A complete model of a house and farm, with two accessory jars, all made of ceramic. Dating to the Eastern Han Dynasty, it is from Vietnam, which was dominated by the Chinese during that period. Of the many subtle differences between those found in China and those found in Vietnam, this set typically does not include any animal models. Interestngly, these typically also show a thatched roof only, while in the case of this one the house's roof appears tiled, and includes what appears to be t ...click for details

A near perfect condition example of the Chinese ceramic tradition as perpetuated in Vietnam while under Chinese rule, this censer has a pleasing color variation and fine crackle to the glaze as a result of the wood fired kilns used to make it. Featuring a pair of pierced taotie medallions and sitting on three legs, it is nearly identical in style and form to one published in one of the most complete guides to the subject, "Viet Ceramics, a Separate Tradition", by John Stevenson and Jo ...click for details

A unique little representation, this pot bellied form, with a glaze of color and type usually seen ceramics of the 13th and 14th century (though also somewhat later and somewhat earlier). The base and interior are both obscured by the late 19th, early 20th century metal work, so the dating is made as the most likely call, as wear and glaze consistency help to confirm general age. The metal appears to be a lower content silver alloy in most places, with some copper alloy use in secondary places ...click for details

Though this particular jar only left Vietnam relatively recently, it is an example of a thriving ceramic trade with Japan during the 16th and 17th century. Originally viewed as of lesser value, the rough quality of this kind of unglazed vessel became more popular as its place in the aesthetic of the Grass Hut tea ceremony grew more appreciated. Generically known as Namban ware, this specific form would have been called nawasudare, or rope curtain, in reference to the vertical ribbing on the si ...click for details

This museum quality jar in many ways represents the height of Vietnamese ceramic production. The independant Ly dynasty (1009-1225), after a thousand years of Chinese rule, marked a creative transition as well as a political one. The influences of Champa, India, and Cambodia were combined with the traditions of the Tang and Song dynasties to help create a unique ceramic tradition. Those with an ivory glaze, as this one, tend to be particularly original in style. This type of jar is also seen ...click for details
