A wonderful example of pre classic Cham sculpture, this feminine garuda figure is carved in high relief in sandstone. the conical, linear treatment of the hair is one of the indicators of the period, as is the simpler aspect of the sculpture. A difficult subject to shoot indoors, I have included pictures taken in sunlight.
Approximately 14x15.75x5 inches, 35.5x40x12.5 centimeters.

being donated to the Wing Luke Asian Museum Hard Hat Gala

Carved stone head of a Cham deity, possibly Avalokitshevra. Though worn, one can clearly see in this well carved stone sculpture the features typically associated with Cham sculpture of the period, including the facial characteristics as well as the vertically linear depiction of the hair and the high topknot. Also to be noted is what appears to be a figure of Amitabha at the base of the topknot. This placement of the Amitabha is frequently associated with sculpture depicting Avalokiteshvra. ...click for details

This Khmer sandstone relief, dating to between the 13th and 14th century, features virtually identical images on both sides. It is similar in style to the Bodhisattvas one sees from Thailand of the same period (late Lopburi), which also reflected the combination of Khmer and indegenous influences. From Vietnam, this piece is approximately 56 cm. high, 34.5 cm. wide, and 13 cm deep (including base in height only. Base is 10 cm. high, 47cm wide, 26 deep.)

The facial features of this Buddha show the Malayo-Polynesian heritage of its origin, the Cham people of Vietnam. Dating probably to the 16th to 17th century, the Khmer influences seen in the form and in the jewelry are hallmarks of the time when the two shared cultural influence.

The History of the Cham help to date this piece. The kingdom of Champa was a major power in the region until their defeat by the Vietname ...click for details
