SOLD!

Though I can't positively identify it as earlier than 17th century, this vase, decorated with moulded dragons, has an ivory glaze reminiscent of earlier Ly/Tran wares, with a green in the areas where it has pooled into the relief work that is akin to that found on some Song Dynasty pieces. A wonderful piece, in good condition but with some losses to the glaze (shown in pics)as well as remaining dirt encrustation that could not be removed. Approximately 23 cm. in height

Frequently referred to as a "Buddhist Bible", or "Palm Leaf Manuscript", books such as these are actually closer to being rules of ceremony, and are made from lacquered cloth (frequently monks robes) with gold leaf. These Burmese books, known as Kammawa-sa, contain nine elements from an original Pali text, and are written in a stylized form of Burmese known as tamarind seed for the thick, squared form of the script. They were given to the monastery upon the entance of a son ...click for details

The use of matching grains to the doors and panels of this broad cabinet help add to the effect induced by the use of the pale Chinese walnut. Subtle traces of red lacquer to the front, probably added after its original manufacture, today enhance the grain it originally would have obscured. The sides and top still have a primarily intact coat (pictures coming soon), with the sides also having simple paintings of bamboo. Original hardware. One of the most famous statues of the Buddha in S.E.
