Carved stone head of a Cham deity, possibly Avalokitshevra.
Though worn, one can clearly see in this well carved stone sculpture the features typically associated with Cham sculpture of the period, including the facial characteristics as well as the vertically linear depiction of the hair and the high topknot. Also to be noted is what appears to be a figure of Amitabha at the base of the topknot. This placement of the Amitabha is frequently associated with sculpture depicting Avalokiteshvra. As a side note, Avalokiteshvra evolved into a feminine form, Guan Yin, in China. Small repair to the back base. Approximately 12.5 x 5 x 5 inches; 32 x 12.5 x 12.5 cm. For those interested in such things, I am experimenting with the use of a desktop scanner as a magnifying tool. I have included 3 pictures taken this way, at 600 dpi. Color is not true .. engrained dirt overshadows the oranges as a bright yellow, and magnification needs to be estimated, as the scanner is not strictly intended for this and does not provide precise information. I figure around 10x, if not more(though not shown to that degree). It can go up to 2400dpi, but I would need another computer just to handle the memory issues. |
