Probably late Ming Dynasty, this small chest, of Mongolian origin, was apparently intended for use as a strong box to be strapped to a horse. The exterior features dragons, chilin, and floral motifs in a combination of polychrome and gesso. Interestingly, this chest was in turn made from an older piece, as the interior features fragments of art, similarly done to the exterior, with the exception of a small figural theme done strictly in paint.
