A near perfect condition example of the Chinese ceramic tradition as perpetuated in Vietnam while under Chinese rule, this censer has a pleasing color variation and fine crackle to the glaze as a result of the wood fired kilns used to make it. Featuring a pair of pierced taotie medallions and sitting on three legs, it is nearly identical in style and form to one published in one of the most complete guides to the subject, "Viet Ceramics, a Separate Tradition", by John Stevenson and John Guy (example from the Duong Ha Collection, page 117, plate 17). Probably from the Red River valley, as the kaolin like white of the clay (10-15% alumina, actually less than kaolin), the white to greenish glaze, and the style of the piece are all particular to that area. Circa 1st - 3rd century AD. Approximately 6 inches high by 7 inches ind width, 15 centimeters by 18 centimeters |
