In a very interesting letter to Count Agostino de’ Landi, dated November 14, 1542, Tolomei outlines the activity and goals of the Roman Accademia della Virtù, originally established to implement the transposing of literary forms, grammar and vocabulary from classical Latin to modern Italian. After 1539 the academy, then composed of grammarians, philologists, antiquarians and archaeologists, turned to the study of Vitruvius’ treatise on architecture. According to Tolomei’s letter, the academy had formulated an eight-point program: 1) a Latin commentary on the difficult passages of Vitruvius, 2) a new critical edition of Vitruvius, 3) a Latin lexicon of terms used in Vitruvius, 4) a Greek lexicon of terms used in Vitruvius, 5) an edition of Vitruvius rewritten in good Latin style, 6) a translation of Vitruvius’ text into Tuscan with a lexicon of Tuscan terms, 7) a collection of the principles and examples taken from Vitruvius, 8) the study of the ancient buildings of Rome, and of its sculpture, medals, works of hydraulic and military engineering. Despite the removal of this group from active participation in architecture, it may have had considerable impact on the establishing of the selective methodology and the intellectual rigor of later architectural theoreticians | |||||||||||||||
