This 9.75" t. x 11.5" x 10.75" hand-carved wooden sculpture of a cow and her calf is a fine example of Haitian art. The entire piece seems to have been carved from a single block of wood and then polished by hand, where the artist desired to do so. The mother is tethered to a stump, and you can see the rope trail off behind her. The ground is nicked and textured, and also has some greenish patination. As the calf is nursing, the mother is licking her on her rump.

Outstanding use of negative space, and very realistic modeling. Signed by the artist AMERZIE and also marked HAITI (beneath the signature).

This piece is believed to date to the 1940s or 1950s. It came from the estate of a member of the Warner and Swazey family in Cleveland, Ohio, who were manufacturers of lenses, telescopes, etc., during the late 19th century and who traveled the globe.

No nicks, chips, cracks or repairs.
