This extremely rare 10.75" plate was thrown on a potter's wheel and hand-decorated by Lawrence Blazey in 1934. Blazey studied pottery seriously for the first time only after Cowan Pottery closed in 1931, after which time Russell Barnett Aitken and Harold Hunsicker inherited Cowan's wheel and set up shop as the Pottery Workshop (a few years later). As this piece indicates, Blazey's first attempts were not fully successful. The foot is pierced in the wrong location to hang properly, for one thing. There are also firing lines, crazing, and other technical difficulties, in addition to some glaze loss (front right rim). Hand-incised LB and 34 above and below the hand-incised logo of Pottery Workshop. Also bears ink notation LAWRENCE BLAZEY. In the late 1930s, Blazey was living in an apartment on West Boulevard. Then he received a contract to build an all-steel house that he designed and which is (naturally) still standing in Bay Village, built in 1942. He lived in this home, the first all-steel house in America, until about 1995, when I assisted his daughter in helping him streamline most of his possessions and move to California. He died a few years later. I received the piece directly from the Blazey family.
