A little footstool like this has a million other uses besides just looking scrumptious wherever you put it. Personally, I can think of nothing more important than that, however you might find it a good place to leave your book beside your chair; you can put your drink there (use a coaster please); all cats like footstools like this, and small dogs might; put your foot up on it to tie your shoe...you see, the list is endless.
This little gem is French and dates to 1880-1900. The leather is in ...click for details
Okay, I am definitely winging it here, because I've never had one of these before, in fact I have never seen one of these before, but here is what I think it is. I think it is a late 19th century Anglo-Indian alms box, or mite box. When I was growing up we used to get mite boxes at church and we would put our coins in them for the less fortunate, and turn them in at church when they were full. (Mine was cardboard.) The wood is a dark and fairly hard wood but I do not know what kind it is. ...click for details
Offered here is a beautiful little round French walnut table. There is extensive use of inlay, predominately on the top where the inlay radiates out from the center like rays from the sun. Inlay decorates the base, the drawer and string inlay on the tapered legs and on the low shelf. The drawer is dovetailed, and the drawer bottom and the bottom of the base are replacements. The table stands 28" high, and the top is 20" in diameter.
Offered here are two painted French fauteuils upholstered in a fabulous geometric needlepoint. Each chair is in excellent condition. Each measures 33" at the back, 19" deep and 21" across (inside the arms). The chairs are sold individually.
Offered here is a pair of Victorian Gothic Revival parlor chairs dating to about 1870. They are upholstered in a fine, pale gold fabric, which is in perfect condition. The upholstery tacks are embossed brass or other metal. Each chair has 1 issue. One chair has a piece of molding missing on the front, the other chair has an age split in the back which has a splint on it. These are very pretty, hand carved and beautifully made.
This gorgeous mirror is giltwood and gesso with an eglomise panel in the top. It dates to the mid part of the 19th century. It measures 47" by 25.5". The columns that flank the glass are topped with a palm motif. It has a few nicks in the gilt finish and the mirror is a replacement (though not new). Most of the original gilding is intact and there have been some touch ups. The price reflects the issues. Probably English.
This is a very pretty Windsor chair in early black paint. My favorite part of the chair is the hand carved stiles on the back that are curved back so carefully but are still slightly irregular. The chair is sturdy and the legs do not wobble. Seat height is 17", back height is 33" at the center point. The legs, sides and stiles are bamboo turned, and the legs have a nice little splay to them. This is a charming country chair.
This is a wonderful spiral and wreathed column, often referred to as a Solomonic column. The association with Solomon dates to late antiquity when a set of six white marble spiral columns served as supports for the ciborium, or canopy, over the tomb of the apostle in the basilica of Old St. Peter's. The belief is that the columns were taken from the Temple of Solomon and delivered to Rome from the Holy Land by Helen, mother of Constantine the Great. The form was used by European artists an ...click for details
Offered here is a fine French Louis-Philippe mirror in gold and silver gilt. It is in the typical form with the rounded corners at the top and straight on the bottom. There is a beaded edge on the interior of the frame. In addition, there is an interesting carved floral and foliage motif carved into the frame all the way around it. Naturally there is some wear to the frame, which only adds to the beauty and the lustre of an early piece. The frame measures 24" by 32" approximately.
Offered here is a fine American Federal sideboard with a nice old surface. I believe the hardware is original. There is one original key that does not seem to work all the drawers. The drawers are cock beaded with satinwood inlay and are dovetailed with chamfered bottoms. There appears to be writing on the side of one drawer but I cannot make it out (pictured). I believe the secondary wood is pine. The right hand drawer is constructed to look like two drawers but is one deep drawer for win ...click for details
