19th Century Spiked Leather Dog Collar

19th Century Spiked Leather Dog Collar

SOLD

This is a fierce looking dog collar made of leather filled with sharp spikes. It was probably made in Germany, but belonged to a Frenchman because the tag has a French name and other French words engraved on it. These were used to protect the dog from wolves and probably other dogs, since a predator goes for the neck when attacking. This is about as wide as the collar could be (3") so the dog would have range of motion when they wore it. Still, this was a pretty good sized dog as the dia ...click for details

Offered here are wonderful bookends that look like (and feel like) they are sculpted in stone, but are likely some sort of composite material. They are that great graphite gray color and depict an exaggerated female form in relaxed poses. They are signed and dated, STRAUCH 94. Each piece is different from the other in size and form and measure sort of loosely 5" by 5".

SOLD

John Mace is from Norfolk, England and is one of my favorite painters of the English countryside and it's animals. This painting depicts sheep in the pasture along with some chickens. It is a blustery day, the bare trees are blowing and smoke curls from the chimney of the old farmhouse in the background. The painting is framed in a wood and gilt frame. The image is 5" by 7", the framed dimensions are 7.5" by 9.5". I've had several of Mace's paintings over the ...click for details

Offered here is one of two exquisite identical imari plates, circa 1900, Japan. The enameling is in iron red, green and gilt with cobalt and gilt in the center in a foo lion motif. The plate is divided into eight panels in four different motifs of animals, specifically a dragon, bird and two different dogs. The plates are approximately 8" in diameter and are in very fine condition. There is almost invisible rubbing to the gilt and similarly minute rough spots to the edge in one or two p ...click for details

19th Century Italian Faience Candlestick

SOLD

here we have a stunning candlestick in cobalt blue and ivory in a rather whimsical design. It is in faience, or tin glazed earthenware, and I believe it to be late 19th century. Faience is brittle, so there are some chips in the glaze of course, but we overlook the small issues in this type of ware. The candlestick stands 10" and is 4.75" at the base. There is a monogram on the bottom and ITALIA.

SOLD

Offered here is a very handsome bronze sculpture of a Serengeti lion dating to around the turn of the century. It has a lovely warm patina, with a bit of a sheen on the high spots where hands have been. I believe it was probably attached to a base of some type because there is a hole on the underside where a screw might have been. This lion has substantial heft. I don't have a way of weighing it here at the shop, but I will guess maybe 8 pounds. The lion is 8" across and 4" hi ...click for details

Offered here is a fun little modernist painting kind of (loosely speaking) cubist in style, and done in impasto with nice colors and a rather appealing naivete (love that table top!). It appears to have been painted between 1950-1970 in my opinion. It is not framed, and someone rather recently painted the edge white, I suppose to give it a fresher look. The painting is signed on the verso "Basoa", and below that "J. Shapiro". The canvas on the back has toning, and the str ...click for details

SOLD

Offered here is a perfectly lovely small agateware bowl in wonderful colors of yellow, green, black and sort of rose. The bowl is thinly potted and the glaze is smooth and shiney. The bowl is raised up an a short pedestal base. The interior of the bowl is mottled, as is the underside of the foot. It almost looks like a signature or a maker's mark on the bottom, but if it is, it's impossible to make out. There is one tiny (old) flake on the rim. You'll notice in the pictures some ...click for details

SOLD

Offered here is a pair of truly fabulous candlesticks that are likely French in origin. They probably date to the early 19th century and possibly a bit earlier. They have impressive height (nearly 21"), and the most beautiful turned column. Each one is just slightly different, but close enough to be considered a pair. They have worm holes and nicks and bumps. The base at one time was drilled for lamps, but that has since been filled, and one candlestick has been repaired in a couple of ...click for details
