The panels of bamboo are tied together with thin strips of bamboo and form an intricate and very beautiful knot. The panels are cut so that they form an undulating rim of the basket. The bamboo has aged to a silvery hue. The basket is perfectly balanced. The measurements are 12" to the top of the handle, and about 5" across the top. Early to mid 20th century. The figure is a seated woman. It sits on a beautiful gilt brass base. The lamp measures 15" to the top of the shade. The figure on the base is 7" high, and the figure alone is 4.5" high. It is in very fine condition all around. A to-die-for item to be sure. The top is tortoiseshell with metal stringing in the corners. The front and back sides of the box are a lighter color tortoiseshell, and the two end sides are a darker more mottled variety of tortoiseshell. The lamp has foo lion motifs around the circumference of the vase, other small bird and animal motifs around the base, as well as a scale design and leaf design. The lamp is on a brass or brass plated base. The vase measures 15" on it's base. It is 21" up to lightbulb socket. It is not perfect. The interior accoutrements are missing and some shrinkage and warping has occurred. That has caused the lid to be offset a bit and there is evidence of a little gluing here and there. That said, it is a very appealing box on four little bun feet and with a fine patina. It measures 9" by 5" by 6" high (measurements approximate). Betts was known for her portraits, landscapes and still lifes. She was also a muralist. Betts studied in NY with William Merritt Chase and, later, in Paris before WWII, where she exhibited in 1930. The painting measures 12.75" by 16.25" as framed, and the site dimensions are 9.5" by 13". It is on artists board. The painting and the gilt wood frame are in fine condition.
