SOLD

Here we have a wonderful religious artifact that dates to the 18th-19th century. They are carved of wood, were gessoed and enameled over that. Very little of that remains, more gesso than enamel, but you can see small areas of skin toned paint on the tops of both feet. They are almost life sized, well formed and well carved, and a wonderful relic. They measure approximately 8" in length.

Offered here is a wonderfully evocative carved wood sculpture of a head, presumably a santo head. I am pretty sure it is at least 18th century, and possibly earlier. It definately has characteristics that are masculine, if will you notice the heavy brow ridge, and the straight nose, and the turn of the mouth. As you can see, there is a crack that runs down one side of the face, a piece of the other side of the face that has loss, losses to the nose, and parts of the ears are missing. (That so ...click for details

This is a large leaf form gilt wood tray that is hand carved on both sides. The top has a variety of little animals on the tray, including a crab, frogs, lizard, spider, a crawfish and a fly. They are high relief, almost full figured. The leaf is beautifully carved in a stylistic form with curling edges. The underside of the tray has raised veining. The tray measures approximately 17" by 10.5". Almost all of the gilding is intact, but it has mellowed over time to a warm patina, a ...click for details

This little music box has the loveliest surface of burled wood with this warm dark patina, tiny age cracks, and a great feel. There is a small inlaid brass plaque in the center of the top, flush with the surface. It can be monogrammed if you choose to do that. It does not have a lock, but lifts with a small decorative piece at the front. The interior is compartmented, and has a little wire that trips the music box when opened. It winds underneath. There is a paper label that reads Paris an ...click for details

This is a beautifully carved figure, carved from a single piece of mahogany. It dates to the late 18th to early 19th century. It was deaccessioned from the National Museum of the Philipines in Manila and sold through Sloan's, after which I acquired it. I am pretty sure the head is ivory, and the head is fitted with glass eyes. He's missing one arm and the hand from the other arm but the form is so fluidly beautiful that it doesn't matter. The carving is lovely, from the drape of ...click for details

This is an adorable tiny box to hold stamps. It is hand carved in a grape vine motif with a small cluster of grapes and grape leaves. Carved into the bottom is "TETE NOIRE". There are ink stains on the box, but it doesn't detract from the charm of this small wonder. The lid fits securely, the hinge works fine, and there are no chips or cracks and no repairs. The box measures 2.25" by 1.25" and is .75" deep. Circa 1900.

These are called trophies because they depict 18th century hunting themes, with hanging game birds, bugles, bows and arrows and the like. This is hand carved, probably Italian, but I tend to think of the motif as French. It is quite wonderful, dates to the early 20th century, and is in good condition. There are a few nicks here and there, and evidence of a piece having been reglued, but nothing you wouldn't expect in this type of decoration. The size is approximately 36"" high ...click for details

This is a very beautiful carved giltwood wreath with a classical bust in the center. I don't know where or how this would have been used, because the wreath is the same on both sides, the figure is not. It makes a stunning wall piece. The size is approximately 13" by 9" and dates to the 19th century.
