It is not perfect. The interior accoutrements are missing and some shrinkage and warping has occurred. That has caused the lid to be offset a bit and there is evidence of a little gluing here and there. That said, it is a very appealing box on four little bun feet and with a fine patina. It appears to be a letter box, or to contain documents, since it has a rack in the lid that would hold paperwork. There is a center tray that lifts out, and a side compartment that opens, as well as wells for ink and pencils. The lip is trimmed in brass, top and bottom, that is nailed down, and the hinges and lock are brass. There is oxidation on the metal but it is not rusty. It is paint over gesso, and it is painted a very dark blue, almost black. It has gilt rosettes and the edges are trimmed in gilt. The convex mirror measures 10" in diameter.
