Japanese Meiji Period Embroidered Screen
Offered here is a six panel silk embroidered screen hand made in Japan around 1910. The six panels are black silk. The four interior panels are embroidered with tall irises, naturalistic in form, and three kingfishers flying towards them. The colors are soft and subtle in pale shades of silver, gold, blue, and celadon, punctuated with black on the throats of the birds. The ground is a soft black. The two end panels do not have embroidery on them. The panels are framed in black lacquer frames. The backs of the panels are covered in fabric, the two end panels in the same silk as they show on the front. The screen is 66" wide and 36" tall. The condition is good although there are several thin slices in the silk, and some slight wear to the frames.
