Faux Crocodile Hide Hand Mirror
This item falls into the "what were they thinking?" category. I have seen these from time to time over the years, and I admit to buying them when I find them in good condition because I think they are just so bizarre! They are made of some sort of composite material, it may even be papier mache, but I've never really figured that out, and they are made to look for all the world like the hide of an old alligator or crocodile. I have seen the mirrors with the round handle that you can hang on the wall, but I like this kind because there is more of it to marvel over. This mirror dates to around 1900, maybe a little later, and has a beveled mirror. There is some scratching to the surface of the glass and a bit of ghosting perhaps, but the glass is in fine condition. On the back you can see the remnants of old varnish, but basically it is in remarkable condition. It is 10.5" long and 5.5" across.
