A wonderful chawan (tea bowl) made by one of the best Karatsu potters, Nishioka Koju (1917-2006). The master craftsman established his kiln, after having researched the ancient ways of making pottery, in 1973. A praised artist, he remained a humble man, although other great potters like Arakawa Toyozo and Fujiwara Kei were firing at his kiln. This particular vessel is an e-karatsu chawan (karatsu tea bowl with a picture), as it presents a circle drawn in the fashion of Zen monks. One of the finest bowls of that type I have ever seen. Please inquire if you have some questions.
The chawan is signed by the potter and is in perfect condition. It will be shipped in a signed box.
