he sobriety of this chaire (tea caddy) is what makes its beauty. The dark caramel robe of this round vessel makes it look as sweet as a mitarashi-dango (a sweetened rice dumpling), yet its function as a thick tea container in the Japanese tea ceremony gives it pomp and nobility.
This particular chaire was made by a potter named Matsumoto Tetsuzan, a third generation potter from the town of Seto, a Japanese pottery production center for more than 500 years.
