Finely Carved Large Soapstone Seal with Dragons 18th C
Finely carved from a large block of marbled deep red and pale ochre soapstone in the shape of a mountain, entwined with seven dragons chasing flaming pearls, the reddish brown occlusions used to highlight their features and accentuate their thrashing tails and undulating bodies, the base bearing a seven character seal mark, the stone a very smooth patina. 18th C. 5 5/8 in. high, 5 5/8 in. wide.

Provenance: New York collection

Soapstone carvings of this quality, color, size and decoration are very rare and we are not aware of any similar seal published. Compare a well-carved 18th C boulder-shaped soapstone dragon seal with one dragon, 4 3/8 in. high, Sotheby's New York, March 16, 1984, lot 208; an undated boulder-shaped soapstone seal with two fu-lions 7 1/2 in. high, Sotheby's New York, September 25, 1986, lot 252; a finely carved 18th C boulder-shaped ochre colored soapstone with carvings of a scholar and his acolyte in a boat amidst rocks and trees, 4 1/4 in. high, Sotheby's Hong Kong, October 27, 1993, lot 334; and a pair of large soapstone Buddhist lion seals, Kangxi, the soapstone of a color similar to the one being offered here, 13 5/8 in. high, Sotheby's Hong Kong, May 3, 1994, lot 352.

ALL PHOTOGRAPHS ARE TAKEN IN NATURAL LIGHT WITHOUT ANY COLOR MANIPULATION.
