Stone hokora, a protective structure originally employed to house the deity, be it Buddhist, Shinto, or an indeterminate hybrid thereof, of a given clan or locality. Clearly dated on the interior rear wall to the 18th year of the Kyoho Era (1733), mid-Edo Period. Minor loss. Extraordinary lichen accumulation.Overall height: 40.5 cm Width of roof: 37.5 cm Depth of roof: 35.2 cm Height of interior space: 24.1 cm Width of interior space: 12.3 cm Depth of interior space: 10.8 cm. Once found throughout the Japanese countryside on the properties of landed households and religious establishments both Shinto and Buddhist, stone hokora today have all but disappeared. This is a particularly noteworthy example of the genre, the foundation conceived openly to maximize visibility of the enshrined deity and the sculpturally overwrought roof displaying a family crest in a style evocative of, if not in fact indicative of, the Edo Period's ruling Tokugawa clan. Tokugawa or not, this is in no sense an ordinary hokora. The three stone pieces appearing in the photographs are examples of deities that might have been housed originally in this hokora; they are not included in the indicated price.
