Gorinto (lit. 5-tiered stupa) sculpted in four parts from an igneous stone. Muromachi Period ca. 1500. Minor old loss. Good lichen accumulation.Height: 51.5 cm Packaged weight: 21 kg. The gorinto is a uniquely Japanese style of stupa comprising five geometric forms, which correspond (from bottom) to earth, water, fire, wind, and ethereal space. The Japanese Shingon sect of esoteric Buddhism views the gorinto as a symbol of Dai-Nichi Buddha, who, underlying all things, manifests himself in the five elements making up the physical world. Gorinto sculpted in four parts, the uppermost part comprising two of the five geometric forms, are far more uncommon than gorinto sculpted from a single stone.

Good lichen accumulation.Height: 62 cm Width: 23 cm Depth: 16 cm. The gorinto is a uniquely Japanese style of stupa comprising five geometric forms, which correspond to (from bottom) earth, water, fire, wind, and ethereal space. The Japanese Shingon sect of esoteric Buddhism views the gorinto as a symbol of Dai-Nichi Buddha, who, underlying all things, manifests himself in the five elements making up the physical world. A notably handsome example of type with excellent size and significant age, the lower portion slightly tapered for easy insertion into the soil. Uncommon.

Figural depiction of Urashima Taro standing upon his sea-faring turtle mount, a fan held in the right hand and a good-luck gourd in the left, sculpted from a high-quality granite incorporating pink quartz, which lends the stone and the lichen accumulated upon it a pink cast. Edo Period ca. 1850. Virtually pristine condition, with good lichen accumulation.Height: 35.2 cm An exquisitely executed, and exceedingly uncommon, depiction in stone of Urashima Taro, the fabled Japanese time-traveler whose rough equivalent in European fable is Rip Van Winkle.

Standing Amida Buddha, the hands forming the raigo-in mudra, the gesture of welcoming to paradise. Joined-block wood construction, finished in lacquer and gilt, the eyes of inset crystal. Early- to mid-Edo Period ca. 1700. Entirely original condition, showing no signs of repair or refinishing, with loss only to the middle and ring fingers of the upraised right hand and relatively heavy soot patination overall.Height, including lotus-form dais: 64.3 cm Height of Amida figure only: 55.0 cm An elegantly rendered Amida with original lotus-form dais.

Woodblock-printed compendium of decorative motifs and sculptural models traditionally employed in Japanese temple/shrine architecture, complete in two volumes. Edo Period ca. 1850. Rubbing to the covers of both volumes and slight discoloration of the interior pages. Loss to the lower-right corner of the back cover and adjacent pages of one volume.Each volume has height of 26 cm and width of 18 cm and contains 50 printed pages. An extreme rarity, perfect for fans of Japanese Buddhist/Shinto architectural work.
