Stone Nyoirin Kannon Bosatsu Bodhisattva Jizo Edo 18 c.
Nyoirin Kannon Bosatsu in characteristic seated pose of royal ease, sculpted from a gray-hued sedimentary stone. Clearly dated on the back to the opening year of the Kanpo Era (1741), mid-Edo Period. Very minor old loss. Light lichen accumulation.

Height: 44 cm
Width: 25 cm
Depth: 15 cm

An elegantly hewn Nyoirin Kannon, the only Buddhist deity invariably depicted in the seated pose of royal ease in the Japanese sculptural tradition. This piece's excellent condition suggests that it passed a significant portion of the past 270 years placed inside a large hokora (protective stone hut). To view an example of a hokora, please see our stock #159.
