Seated Stone Kukai (Kobo Daishi), Late-Edo Period
Seated stone depiction of Kukai (774-835, known posthumously as Kobo Daishi). With the exception of a hairline crack running vertically from the forehead to the nose, the condition is flawless.

Height 31.2 cm, Width 19.6 cm, Depth 12.5 cm.

Kobo Daishi is the founder of the Japanese Shingon sect of esoteric Buddhism and the creator of the kana syllabary still used today in written Japanese. A rare, and beautifully executed, depiction in stone of one of Japan's most revered cultural heroes.
