Shinjuku-ku, Tokyo 160-0015

Stone Jizo Bosatsu bodhisattva Muromachi/Edo 16 c.

A standing Jizo Bosatsu sculpted in relief from basalt, the left hand bearing aloft a hoju (sacred jewel) and the right grasping a shakujo (crozier). Late-Muromachi Period/early-Edo Period ca. 15501600. Notably good condition, with inevitable softening of the lines and contours and minor surface erosion.

Height: 45.1 cm
Width: 20.0 cm
Depth: 14.2 cm.

A brilliant Jizo stone, with stylistic signs pointing clearly to a pre-Edo manufacture date. Extremely uncommon. (For a discussion of stylistic characteristics of pre-Edo stone sculpture, please see our stock #15 and stock #54.)
