Stone Koma-Inu Pair Jizo Buddha Dated Meiji 37 (1904)
Pair of stone Koma-Inu (lit. Korean dog), each beast seated upon its original rectangular foundation stone. Clearly dated on the back surface of one of the foundation stones to the 37th year of the Meiji Era (1904). Excellent condition, with only minor loss to the edges of the foundation stones and softening of the lines and contours overall, and minimal patination.

Overall height, including foundation stone: 79 cm
Height of each Koma-Inu only: 60 cm
Width of foundation stone: 34 cm
Depth of foundation stone: 53 cm.

A thoroughly classic pair of guardian beasts, with whiskered maw open ("Ah") and closed ("Un") in turn. Stone Koma-Inu with such impressive size and tangible presence reveal themselves in the local market with maddening infrequency. All factors considered, one would be hard-pressed to find a more desirable pair of dogs. Exceedingly uncommon.
