Stone depiction of a seated Amida Buddha, the hands placed centrally on the lap in the Amida jo-in concentration mudra. Mid- to late-Edo Period ca. 1800. Very slight old loss to the upper-right perimeter. Excellent lichen accumulation. Height: 52.6 cm Images of a small group of bodhisattva (Jap. bosatsu), namely, Jizo Bosatsu, the various manifestations of Kannon Bosatsu, and Seishi Bosatsu, dominate the field of Japanese stone sculpture throughout the Edo Period (1603-1868) and into the modern era. Largely absent from the field of production during the same period are stone images of the four main manifestations of the Buddha (Jap. Nyorai), namely, Amida Nyorai, Dai-Nichi Nyorai, Shaka Nyorai, and Yakushi Nyorai. This depiction of Amida Nyorai is, therefore, a distinct rarity. The Amida jo-in concentration mudra is formed by the hands only of seated depictions of Amida Buddha; never is it seen on standing depictions of Amida Buddha, with extremely few exceptions. An exceptional seated Amida Buddha, deftly executed and with a youthful yet authoritative mien. Highly uncommon. |
